Special Spaces is a fast growing architecture & design digital and print publication house in the Sub-African region. As a 100 percent independently owned and run media company, we are committed to reporting on architecture and design in a way that is clear, accurate and balanced.
Our work adheres to South African Press Council Code:
  • Gathering and Reporting of News
We will take care to report news truthfully, accurately and fairly. We will make amends for presenting inaccurate information or comment by publishing promptly and with appropriate prominence a retraction, correction, explanation or an apology on every platform where the original content was published.
  • Independence and Conflicts of Interest
We will not allow commercial, political, personal or other non-professional considerations to influence reporting.
  • Privacy, Dignity and Reputation
We undertake to exercise care and consideration in matters involving the private lives of individuals. We afford special weight to South African cultural and social customs. Where there are concerns for the protection, privacy and dignity of people who are bereaved and for those who have passed away, we will act with the necessary sensitivity and respect, as well as with all matters concerning children, the aged, and the physically and mentally disabled. We will exercise care and consideration in matters involving dignity and reputation, which may be overridden only if it is of legitimate public interest.
  • Discrimination and Hate Speech
We will not use discriminatory or denigratory references to people’s race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture, language and birth or other status, and not refer to such status in a prejudicial or pejorative context – and shall refer to the above only where it is strictly relevant to the matter reported, and/or if it is in the public interest. We will balance their right and duty to report and comment on all matters of legitimate public interest against the obligation not to publish material that amounts to propaganda for war, incitement of imminent violence or hate speech – that is, advocacy of hatred that is based on race, ethnicity, gender or religion, and that constitutes incitement to cause harm.
  • Advocacy
The media may strongly advocate their own views on controversial topics, provided that they clearly distinguish between fact and opinion, and no misrepresentation, suppression or distortion of relevant facts.
  • Branded Content
Across our print and digital platforms, Special Spaces is supported by advertising. This includes display advertising, and branded advertorial content, whereby Special Spaces collaborates with a business to produce an article. We only work with brands we know our readers will be interested in, to publish stories that are genuinely useful to our design-loving community.
On specialspaces.co.za and associated online platforms, our advertorial content is labelled at the top of the article with the words “In partnership with…” or “AD”.
In our print titles, including Special Spaces and our advertorial articles are labelled at the bottom of the page with the words “In partnership with…” or “AD”.
